Punjab government preparing to enact law against sacrilege, special session of assembly may be called soon

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the state government will introduce a law to ensure stringent punishment for acts of sacrilege. Chairing a meeting with officials and representatives of Sarb Dharm Beadbi Roko Kanoon Morcha at his official residence, the CM said Punjab is the holy land of great gurus, saints and seers who have shown the path of mutual love and tolerance. It is a matter of great pride that Punjab is a symbol of communal harmony, peace and brotherhood along with a unique blend of socialism and secularism. Mann reiterated that the state government is fully committed to ensure stringent punishment for the perpetrators of sacrilege incidents. He said the government will consult leading legal experts to formulate a strong state law that will prevent offenders from escaping harsh consequences, including the possibility of death penalty, for such heinous crimes. He expressed concern over the existing legal loopholes that allow the perpetrators of such acts to roam freely, terming it completely unfair and unacceptable. The Chief Minister said that the state government would consult all stakeholders, including religious organizations, in drafting the law. He highlighted that the Indian Justice Code (BNS) provides clear provisions about religious places, but it remains silent on holy texts. However, he said that since the subject comes under the Concurrent List, the state has the right to make such a law and legal opinion will be taken accordingly. He said that this process will be completed soon to calm the sentiments of the general public and a cabinet meeting will be called soon on this issue. It is being told that a special session may be called on July 10 and 11. A cabinet meeting can be called soon and it can be approved.
